School Nutrition

Brevard Public Schools (BPS) Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) serves over 19,900 breakfasts and 32,000 lunches each day in the district’s 82 school cafeterias. During the 2012-2013 year, more than 3.5 million breakfasts and 5.7 million lunches were served in our school cafeterias. For the past 13 years, FNS has participated in the Provision 2 Breakfast Program that enables us to provide a no cost breakfast to all students.

Eating Healthy is Important

All meals are planned by a Registered Dietitian and meet U.S.D.A. standards. Breakfast meals include a choice of entree made with whole grains, a variety of fruit and low-fat or fat-free milk. New regulations implemented in 2012 have positively impacted the school lunch program. Students are now required to select a fruit or vegetable; at least half of the grains offered must be whole grains and efforts are underway to reduce sodium levels. Fresh Fruit, steamed vegetables, healthy choice entrees, and a vegetarian option are available daily. Whole grain items include breads, rolls, tortillas, brown rice, pizza crust, corn dogs and chicken nuggets. All baked goods sold a'la carte are reduced in calories and sugar. A'la carte standards for elementary and secondary schools are defined in the district's Wellness Policy and Procedures Manual.

We take pride in serving well balanced nutritious meals to your students. Students are given the opportunity to participate in taste testing to determine student preferences. All nutritionals and school menus can be found above, under the Nutritional Info and/or the Menus & Prices tabs. Nutritionals are categorized by the “GO, SLOW, WHOA” concept from the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) Program. This program helps students make healthier food choices daily.

Students with Special Needs

Students with medical conditions such as allergies need to provide the Cafeteria Manager with a medical statement from their physician. The request must include the dietary condition which restricts the child’s diet and the foods that are required to be omitted. The most common allergens are available under the Nutritional Info tab and then by clicking on the Allergen Information link. If a student has additional dietary restrictions please contact the FNS District Office at (321) 633-1000 ext.690, for assistance from a Registered Dietitian.

Free and Reduced Lunches

All students in Brevard County Schools are given the opportunity to apply for free or reduced price lunch. Applications may be completed online or printed on the Free & Reduced Info page by clicking the tab above. Paper applications are available at each school office and cafeteria. A new lunch application must be submitted each year, unless you are notified that your student has been approved for free lunch as a direct certified student. Only one application is needed per household.

Nutrition Education for Life

Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH)
CATCH is a program that promotes physical activity, healthy food choices and nutrition education in both the school and home environment. CATCH has 4 components: GO, SLOW and WHOA for cafeterias, nutrition education for the classroom, physical education and CATCH family fun!

OrganWise Guys

OrganWise Guys program is a science-based, elementary school physical activity and nutrition program. The Organ- Wise Guys are an engaging cast of characters that motivate our students to make healthy lifestyle behavior changes. They empower students with the knowledge and motivation to help prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, adult-onset diabetes and other chronic diseases. Key messages include maintaining a low-fat diet, eating high fiber foods, drinking water and engaging in regular physical activity.

Student Wellness Advisory Councils (SWAC)

SWAC’s are student organizations in several schools that provide nutrition and wellness promotion for students and staff. Students create excitement for others to embrace healthy lifestyle changes.

School Gardens

FNS continues to plant the seeds in expanding school garden opportunities throughout the district. Students experience measuring plant growth, germination and cause and effect relationships.
